Noctua NH-U9 TR4-SP3 Ryzen Threadripper Epyc CPU Cooler

Noctua’s NH-U9 TR4-SP3 is an excellent choice for AMD’s Threadripper CPUs where space is limited. It supports CPUs with a maximum of 180W but does not support overclocking.

Features

  1. Award-winning NH-U series
  2. Tailored custom version for TR4/SP3
  3. 2x 92mm fans for excellent performance
  4. Anti-vibration pads and fan-clips for second fan
  5. Max TDP 180W, no overclocking (not 250W TDP compatible)

Having received more than 300 awards and recommendations from international hardware websites and magazines, Noctua’s NH-U9 line has become a benchmark for compact 92mm single tower coolers. The TR4-SP3 version is a tailored custom model for AMD’s TR4/SP3 platform (Ryzen Threadripper / Epyc) and features a larger contact surface as well as the latest SecuFirm2 mounting system for socket TR4/SP3. Topped off with two of the renowned quiet NF-A9 PWM 92mm fans in a push/pull dual fan configuration, Noctua’s proven NT-H1 thermal compound and a full 6-year manufacturers warranty, the NH-U9TR4-SP3 forms a highly compact, premium-quality solution that combines outstanding performance, superb acoustics and excellent compatibility for space-restricted TR4/SP3 systems.

Award-winning NH-U series

The NH-U9 TR4-SP3 stems from Noctua’s award-winning NH-U9 series. First introduced in 2005, the NH-U series has become a standard choice for premium quality quiet CPU coolers and won more than 1000 awards and recommendations from leading international hardware websites and magazines.

Tailored custom version for TR4/SP3 (Ryzen Threadripper / Epyc)

At 70x56mm, the copper contact surface of the TR4-SP3 version is more than double the size of the standard model. Tailored to fit the enormous integrated heat-spreaders (IHS) of AMD’s TR4/SP3-based processors, this customised design allows for an optimal heat flow from the CPU over the base to the heatpipes and on to the cooling fins.

Compact 92mm size for best compatibility

Thanks to a total width of only 95mm, the NH-U9 TR4-SP3 provides 100% PCIe clearance and never overhangs the top PCIe x16 slot. At the same time, its height of only 125mm allows it to fit smaller cases and most 4U size rack-mount enclosures.

Dual NF-A9 PWM fans

The NH-U9 TR4-SP3 is equipped with two of Noctua’s award-winning NF-A9 PWM 92mm fans. This push/pull dual fan configuration allows it to achieve a level of quiet cooling performance that is remarkable for such a compact cooler and comes close to the performance of the bigger NH-U12S TR4-SP3.

PWM support and Low-Noise Adaptors

The NF-A9 premium fans supplied with the NH-U9 TR4-SP3 support PWM for convenient automatic speed control through the motherboard. In addition, the maximum fan speed can be reduced from 2000 to 1550rpm using the supplied Low-Noise Adaptors for even quieter operation.

Anti-vibration pads and fan-clips for second NF-F12 (optional)

For users who want to achieve even better performance by adding a second, optional NF-F12 fan to create a push/pull setup, the NH-U12S includes fan clips and an extra set of custom-designed anti-vibration pads that allow to off-set the rear fan by 5mm to improve acoustics in dual-fan mode.

SecuFirm2 mounting system for TR4/SP3

Noctua’s SecuFirm2 mounting systems have become synonymous with quality, safety and ease of use. The TR4-SP3 variant has been completely custom-designed for the new socket and is particularly easy to install: Put on the heatsink, fix the four spring-loaded screws and you’re done!

NT-H1 thermal compound

Having received more than 100 awards and recommendations from hardware journalists around the world, Noctua’s NT-H1 is a proven professional grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance, excellent ease of use and outstanding reliability.

6-year manufacturers warranty

Noctua products are renowned for their impeccable quality and outstanding longevity. Like all Noctua fans, the supplied NF-F12 features an MTTF rating of more than 150.000 hours and the entire NH-U12S package comes with a full 6-year manufacturer’s warranty.

250W TDP Cooling?

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper series consists of powerful processors with higher cooling requirements. While standard mainstream processors usually have a TDP rating of 65-105W AMD Ryzen Threadripper (and Eypc) models are available with TDP ratings of up to 280W, which provides challenges not only for the CPU cooler as such but also for chassis ventilation. According to Noctua it is possible but not recommended to use this CPU cooler on any CPU above 180W TDP. Therefore, please do not use this cooler on the 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper, please consider the U12 or U14 versions of the TR4 cooler.

PLEASE NOTE: The NH-U9 TR4-SP3 is a dedicated version for the AMD TR4/SP3 socket. Due to its customised larger base, it cannot be used on any other sockets and is incompatible with Noctua’s standard mounting kits.

“Can’t recommend highly enough!”

“When I required a replacement for my PC, I stumbled across Quiet PC who were mentioned in an article in an online magazine. I found their website rather pleasant. It offers a good selection of components with obvious focus on low noise levels, but without sacrificing performance, and doesn’t overload the potential buyer with tons of options that are likely irrelevant. In other words, they focus on the components they know well. And that shows when you receive the PC (more in a moment).

For my build, I had a few customisation requests and questions: I needed extra cables prepared for disks and a graphics card I wanted to fit in, because I didn’t want to deal with cable management myself (If I had known how spacious the case is, I could have done it myself, though). Those requests were accommodated at no extra cost.

Any questions I had were answered within a few hours, and during follow-up email conversation it rarely took more than an hour to receive a helpful response. Absolutely no copy&paste style emails from Quiet PC! Service and communication has been excellent throughout the ordering process (and beyond).

When the PC arrived, I was positively suprised about the packaging as well as all the extra bits and pieces they ship with the computer: All manuals from individual components, all spare cables, lots and lots of screws for different purposes (put into nicely labelled bags), and even the remaining screws and brackets for the CPU cooler - including the CPU dust cover and extra thermal paste. In other words, you get all the original parts which weren’t needed in the build, and then some!

Before I first switched the PC on, I opened it to add all my disks and the graphics card. All the cables were prepared as I asked them to do. The cable management throughout was very neat and tidy. I have used other custom PC builders in the UK before, but none of them were even close to Quiet PC when it comes to cable management.

So, do Quiet PC build quiet PCs? Absolutely, yes, and without any sacrifice on performance or temperature levels. The case fans and Noctua CPU cooler keep the i7-6700K and the system temperature in the low 30C range during idle and normal office work.

I ended up replacing the case fans with Noctua fans, merely because I’m obsessed with noise levels and they are a bit quieter under load and can respond to raising temperature levels, but that doesn’t take anything away from Quiet PC’s choice -- The computer was already very quiet before, and the manual fan speed slider will be more than sufficient for the majority of users. (In fact you will hardly have to touch it; the idle airflow is good enough and you have to push the PC very hard to get temperatures beyond 55C for the CPU and low 40s for the system)

I apologise for getting carried away with this review! :-)

The bottom line is: brilliant service, including the option to have custom changes done; excellent build quality, packaging and spare parts; quick delivery (4 days in my case, instead of up to 7 as advertised). You can’t go wrong with these guys!”
